[dropcap size=big]A[/dropcap] mysterious encounter between a man who claims to be from the future and the man that he claims is his former self. A surreal psychological thriller about loss and regret. All set within the framework of a time travel story that loosely operates in accordance to the paradox-less MWI (many-worlds interpretation) in quantum mechanics.
Last year we made another short film called THE GREY MATTER and as the initial buzz for that film started to wind down, we got the itch to follow it up with another short. Having depleted much of our savings making THE GREY MATTER, we challenged ourselves to create something that we could turn around pretty quickly and cheaply. We have a soft spot for lo-fi sci-fi films that are rooted in a strong concept and don’t necessarily need complex VFX to make them compelling. We love time travel but it’s a pretty heavily treaded territory in science fiction, so I challenged myself to come up with a concept that adhered to a different set of rules than traditional time travel grandfather paradox. I researched the current popular time travel possibilities derived from string theory and quantum mechanics and decided to write something that utilized the “many-worlds interpretation”. So I mapped out the rules on paper (this map is actually in the in the film if you pay close attention) and wrote “Therefore I Am” in one afternoon. We shot it over a weekend utilizing the equipment from another shoot that my brother/co-director, Luke, was DPing.
