Bullies pressure 16-year-old Edie to choose between her crush and her Jewish identity, but there is a cost that Edie does not anticipate — and cannot undo.
The film is about 16-year-old Edie who lives with her grandmother – a woman who tries to instill moral values and life lessons using her Jewish heritage. However, Edie finds her grandmother’s words constricting and tries to separate herself from what she thinks is the problem: her Jewish faith.
At school, Edie wants to fit in with the popular crowd, particularly because of a boy named Darren whom she has feelings for. But Darren and his friends, June and Chad are not the most tolerable of people and their prejudices toward others not like themselves; drive Edie in a downward spiral.
As Edie struggles to find her way through adolescence, faith, and her first love, she learns that her actions have consequences and perhaps the steep slope she has chosen to go down will risk more than she ever thought possible.

Directors notes

The fear of being considered different is what inspired me to write the screenplay for ‘Uncovering Eden’

Fear is what drives the plot of my film. Edie is afraid of not being accepted by her peers and ending up alone, which leads her to make decisions that have much more terrifying consequences. The same can be said for Darren, who is egged on by his peers to prank Edie’s grandmother – an old woman – and ultimately causes harm. There are many power struggles between protagonist and antagonist and it all revolves around the fear of lack of acceptance.

When I was in high school, I was picked on for being Jewish. I don’t think anyone meant to hurt my feelings as much as they did, but they never the less inspired my short film. Trust me, when you hear the word ‘Jew’ used as a negative adjective often enough, it will make you feel insecure too.

I was cheap because I was Jewish.
I liked bagels because I was Jewish (who doesn’t like bagels?!).
I was afraid of being labeled different because I was Jewish.

I’m honestly not sure if other Jewish kids in my high school felt the way that I did, but there was a point when I stopped telling people I was going to celebrate Chanukah because it would bring on the giggles amongst my other classmates. Hell if I know why.

The fear of not fitting in caused me to turn a cold shoulder to not so much my religion, but rather my Jewish culture. I didn’t want to be associated with what I thought was wrong with me. In that way, Edie is much like myself.

My other character’s actions are all inspired by fear. Darren is afraid of disappointing his father and being rejected by June and Chad. June and Chad feel the need to bully others in fear of looking weak and being bullied themselves. Even Edie’s grandmother is controlled by her fear of not being the parental figure that Edie needs.

My short film Uncovering Eden is about what happens if we let the fear of not being accepted by others have power over our lives. The fictional short film’s extreme consequences serve as a cautionary tale about how disturbing bullying can be and how powerless it makes us feel.
